Make A Witch Hat

Celebrate the season by making a classic decoration you can wear for years- a Quilted Witch Hat. The perfect way to express your individual witchy personality.
You will need 2 yards of material for an adult hat. You can get creative with material found at Ebb and Flow, but the fall/ Halloween fabric selection is small at the moment. Mardens has some super cute retro Halloween/fall prints priced from $4.99 to $6.99 per yard. One yard for the outside and also a yard for the lining. It can be the traditional black and orange, or mix it up. Patchwork is another fun option if you have the time. Do not prewash your fabric. Adult and kid size hat patterns available.
I've done my witch hat research and picked a pattern and techniques that eliminate "hat flop". I don't want a floppy hat to steal my magic.
I'll have two types of interfacing and you'll get to try a "hemostat". I love when my sewing skills get an upgrade while I make something I love.

Raw Edge Appliqué is when fabric edges are purposely left 'raw'. Depending on the fabric, different effects can be achieved. In this class, you will explore some of these differences and 3 or 4 basic hand stitches to layer fabrics together. You’ll make a patch to take home. We will also discuss different applications of this technique.

As we move closer into the colder seasons, we are called to slow down, get our hands moving and our clothes mended. In this visible mending workshop, bring an item to repair by hand, and Maggie will guide you on repair and stitch techniques.
My name is Maggie Ruth Haaland (they/she) and I am a queer fiber artist, educator, natural dyer, visible mender, herbalist, quilter, and foot bath devotee (and I also love hot dogs), newly wiggling my roots into the soil of midcoast Maine. I came to all of these practices via the world of plants, and wanting to find more ways of incorporating their healing and magical properties into our everyday lives. As someone who has moved with chronic illness throughout my adult life, I have come to find the value in slowing down and tending within, to being with what’s right here and offering repair. I believe in softness, rest, and vulnerability and cultivating these things in community.

Intro to Sashiko
With Carrie Palmer

For decoration or repair and mending - learn to start stitching this traditional Japanese style of embroidery.
This class will teach you how to choose and transfer a pattern to your garment or fabric. Make a patch for your jeans or bag, or sew a small ornament or accessory. Students will receive sashiko needles & thread and a selection of fabrics for stitching. Students could bring a garment to repair or decorate or their own sewing kit if desired, but everything to create will be provided. (Woven fabrics, such as shirting & denim, are best for this style of sewing, especially when starting out)
Carrie Palmer works under the name Tiny Tomatoes — she started with cross stitch at age 5 and has not stopped creating with fabric and fiber since. Originally from the Canadian Maritimes, she now lives in Downeast, Maine, when not at work making scones and breakfast… she is spending as much time as possible hiking the local trails, paddling in the ocean, thrifting, — and, of course, stitching with her daughter & friends.

Hexagons or 'Hexies' are traditional shapes used widely in the patchwork and quilting world. In this class, you will learn different methods of creating and embellishing them. You will make a holiday ornament or two to take home and consider their many applications.
